Old City Aikido has been my home dojo for over a decade. All of my training here has been positive and empowering. My seniors have always been patient and supportive of me. The guidance and direction offered by my first Sensei, Donovan Waite, and my current Sensei, Jason Perna, has always been from a place of careful observation and from profound technical knowledge and experience. My training has become an important part of my life and now it is a part of my son's life. During the pandemic, we were able to engage in socially distanced weapons training in Franklin Square. It was a welcomed connection during a difficult time. Sensei Perna naturally highlights how weapons skills relate to open hand techniques. Sensei is frank about which techniques lend themselves to self defense and ways of anticipating how real world scenarios would likely pan out. His drive to find effective ways of responding to attacks has led him to develop a very distinctive style of teaching. Our dojo community...

Old City Aikido is one of the finest dojos on the east coast. Having taught there as a visiting instructor I have seen first hand Perna Sensei’s devotion to cultivating not only his vision for a martial arts school but, a solid training environment for the students. There is a seriousness and an attention to detail, balanced with an open, friendly yet, professional atmosphere. Any student at any level would do well to avail themselves of what is offered at Old City.

Incredible school to train at! What the chief instructors are doing to revolutionize and grow the art is beyond words. The care that is put into the lesson plans and the passion to help grow the students bodies and minds is far beyond what I have seen at any other schools. The confidence and the strength Old City Aikido has helped me discover within myself has been invaluable.

If you are interested in participating in the martial arts at the highest level, then, in my view, Old City Aikido may be an excellent choice for you. The dojo is a very nice space, and everything is beautifully maintained. Most importantly, the instruction is quite focused and effective. I found the spirit of the classes to be quite joyful, despite the serious nature of the practice.
