The best training in Philly! Phil and Rick are world-class teachers, but so are so many of their staff and students. My jiu jitsu has improved immensely, and the optimal class timing means i get to train BJJ and Muay Thai. Lastly, the kid’s class has also been an incredible environment for my 2 sons to learn and train.

Balance is without a doubt, the premier location in the Philadelphia region for BJJ. At anytime you can wonder into class and find people from all over at all levels training on the mats. Not only are Phil and Rick incredible teachers, but they have also established a team of teachers who create a welcoming environment that is conducive for learning. Whether you have never done any martial art or you are an experienced practitioner, Balance is the place to be! With 3 different locations in Philly, I’d highly recommend dropping in to check it out.

An absolutely incredible jiu jitsu gym and community in perfect locations across Philly. The Migliarese brothers (Phil and Rick), who own the gym and teach many of the classes, are not only top-notch grapplers but are also approachable, and love sharing their knowledge with students of all experience levels. The open and friendly culture that they've created permeates down through the entire Balance community - everyone introduces themself before each sparring session, and the more experienced students consistently help newer students learn and grow. In the age of COVID, it's also important to note that Balance is highly focused on cleanliness, personal hygiene, and mutual respect. Safety is paramount at this gym. Phil and Rick frequently talk about their students as being on "Team Balance," whether they are actively competing or just training for enjoyment and personal fitness. When you're at Balance, whether it serves as your new home gym or you're just visiting for a few days, you...

I never wrestled and was 55 years old when I started at the original center city location and now mostly train at the new center city location. All of the instructors and my fellow students are respectful of my age, willing to teach me many things and roll with me. I am a blue belt but and hoping I have a purple belt in my near future. Balance is one of my happy places and an amazing place. Thanks Phil and Ricky

The hardest part of writing a review for Balance is figuring out how to condense all the good things I have to say. There are two phrases spoken at Balance that I believe are contagious throughout the whole school which capture most of what I want to say. “Leave your shoes and your ego at the door” is not just a reminder to train safely but part of a philosophy (ask Phil the definition of philosophy) which helps everyone learn and get better. “I want you to get better so I can get better” is also a part of Balance which spreads through the entire team and everyone including instructors and students are happy to answer every question you have to help you get better. I can tell multiple stories of Phil and Rick not just teaching but living these and it spreading to everyone who trains at Balance.
